Delta, however, is not static. As the stock price moves, the delta of the option changes. This rate of change in Delta is measured by Gamma.

Gamma is highest for "At-The-Money" (ATM) options and options that are close to expiration. Gamma is the accelerator of the options market. If Delta is the speed of a car, Gamma is the acceleration.

When Gamma is high, a small move in the stock price causes a large, sudden change in Delta. Because market makers must constantly adjust their hedges to remain delta neutral, high gamma exposure (GEX) forces them to aggressively buy or sell stock as the price moves. Suddenly, the market maker who previously needed 30 shares to hedge a single contract now needs 50 shares, then 70 shares, then 90 shares, as the delta races toward 1.00 (100 shares).

To stay delta neutral, the market maker is forced to buy more stock. But this forced buying pushes the stock price even higher, which in turn increases the delta of the options even further, which forces the market maker to buy even more stock.

This is the gamma squeeze: Call Buying → Dealer Short Call Position → Dealer Buys Stock to Hedge → Stock Price Rises → Delta Increases (fueled by high GEX) → Dealer Forced to Buy MORE Stock → Stock Price Rises Further.

GameStop (GME): The Perfect Storm

3. The Zero Gamma Flip

The Zero Gamma Flip is the estimated price level where dealer positioning shifts from positive gamma (volatility dampening) to negative gamma (volatility expanding). If a stock is trading below its Zero Gamma level and suddenly crosses above it due to call buying, it enters the "danger zone" where dealer hedging begins to accelerate price movements.
